The last of the Valerii was originally written in 1874 and published in America only. Ten years later a slightly revised text was published in Britain and the etext on this web-site is taken from that first UK edition in Stories revived (1885), subject to changes required by the editor’s standard editorial method. Three corrections have been found necessary to standardise the treatment of foreign words, as detailed below:
