Macmillan’s magazine

founded in 1859, this was the leading monthly from the London publishers Macmillan & Co.. Editors included George Grove (1868‒1883, now best known for his dictionary of music), John Morley (1883‒1885) and Mowbray Morris (1885‒1907). It was in the vanguard of magazines publishing only signed articles. Despite his close connections with Macmillan as publishers of his books, and the serialization of The portrait of a lady (1880‒1881), and The Reverberator (1888), only two of James’s tales and a handful of his review pieces were published here.

a list of James’s tales appearing in this periodical is available on the relevant page of the ‘source periodicals’ section of my index to tales in collections; for details of his non-fiction writing published there consult the index of the standard bibliography by Edel & Laurence
