Reprints of Henry James novels

This checklist is a ‘work in progress’ to list reprints of Henry James's novels and show which of the possible authorized texts was used. Please note the following points :

• the novels are listed in chronological order of their first publication and, under each title, the reprints are also in chronological order, year by year; an alphabetical index of the novels is available below
• for the purposes of this checklist, a ‘novel’ is defined as any fiction of longer than short story length which was published as a separate volume during (or just after) James's lifetime – hence the inclusion of In the cage, which originally appeared as a single volume in 1898
• below the title is a summary of the available authorized texts: that is, those published in James's lifetime in Britain and America and overseen by him or his publishers
• similarly, a ‘reprint’ is defined as a single or multi-volume issue of one or more of these novels; details of short novels appearing in collections of tales, such as In the cage, and of long tales which have been reprinted in single volumes, such as A London life and the many editions of The turn of the screw, can be found in my index to tales in collections (this is largely because the index to tales has been hoovering up any data to do with the shorter fiction for nearly ten years and so has a head start!)
• I have deliberately ignored the recent plethora of ‘print on demand’ publications of James's novels and tales, from publishers such as The Dodo press, The Echo library, Kessinger publications, and 1st World library Ltd; this is because I can't afford to order dozens of relatively expensive editions just to satisfy my (or your) curiosity: if these people really want to make money they will have to be much more explicit about what one is ordering, by, for example, stating which original (out of print) edition they have copied!
• the data given for each reprint edition comprises :
  
  • publisher
  • series   (coded, see next main bullet point)
  • year of publication
  • ISBN
  • text used
  • editor/commentator, and
  • any useful notes of the editor's work or the edition's relationship to others on the list
• to fit it all into the table, much of the data is abbreviated: many of these abbreviations should be self-explanatory, but for expansion of any which you can't interpret, simply hover your cursor over it and the full text will pop up (in any recent browser); for reference though, here is a full list of series codes and their corresponding titles (coverage of each series in not necessarily complete, however) :

• many editions print a note on the text used, so I have not shown this in the ‘notes’ column here; other textual states have been identified by comparison with labelled ones or by use of the ‘selected variants’ in critical editions (and even, occasionally, by comparison with originals!)
• in a few places an edition has claimed to follow the Macmillan 1922 ‘new and complete edition’ (35 volumes): this is shown as ‘1922’ and the authorized text to which it is equivalent is given after this as ‘=’ or ‘≈’
• unqualified ISBNs are for a paperback edition, or hardback if that was the only binding issued, unless followed by ‘hb’ for hardback
• this is not a complete bibliography : I have ignored pre-world war 2 editions and various publishers' subsequent one-off attempts to enter the Henry James marketplace, in order to concentrate on the editions most likely to be found in libraries and bookshops; I have also excluded some ‘academic’ editions, such as the 1976 litho reprint of the whole New York edition by A. M. Kelley (which included the two incomplete novels) and a number of facsimiles of surviving manuscripts or original printings with James's revisions
• the Library of America series consists of multi-novel volumes: I have shown the volume number in the series column, but each volume has a chronological title as follows :

• the Bodley Head Henry James series has only one multi-novel volume (The Europeans and Washington Square in vol. 1) but I have shown the volume number with the series code because library catalogues of this edition often omit the novel title as it is so far down the title page
• rows with the pale-orange background stripe have outstanding queries; rows with a light sage-green background show editions which have not yet been published
• additions or corrections to the information here, or suggestion of editions which should be included but aren't (complete with as many details as possible!), will be gratefully received by
