a popular London-based weekly (and monthly) journal – a ‘record of literature, science, and art’ founded in 1845 and published by G. Vickers; with the Family Herald it was one of the leading publications among the Victorian working classes

(do not confuse it with the present London Journal, which is an academic periodical founded in 1975!)
