Rebekah at the Well
this illustrates the story, in Genesis chapter 24, of Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel, drawing water at their well and giving Isaac, son of Abraham, some of the water when he asked for it, thus signalling that she should become his wife; it was popular with Victorian printmakers as it it conformed with nineteenth-century western ideas of female duty to the family – which, ironically, are noticably lacking in this novel!
