James is referring here to his collection of travel writings, English hours (1905), in the prefatory ‘Note’ of which he wrote: “I may add that I have again attentively looked them [the articles] over, with a view to any possible amendment of their form or enhancement of their meaning, and that I have nowhere scrupled to re-write a sentence or a passage on judging it susceptible of a better turn.”
