in 1907 the Dover Harbour Board were permitted to increase their passenger tax in return for improvements in the facilities; these included reclaiming land in the Western Docks, on which the South Eastern & Chatham Joint Committee built a new railway station, ‘Dover Marine’ for boat traffic; work was only completed in 1914, just in time to handle the huge numbers of troops travelling to and from France
