these ‘things’ included the three short stories for the Atlantic, two of which would turn into novels(!), another short story, commissioned for the first issue of Cosmopolis (this was The figure in the carpet and expanded to appear in two parts) and two novels for the British publisher Heinemann (although of course The old things became one of these as The spoils of Poynton – I believe the other was The other house)
