Henry James

The spoils of Poynton

A note on the text

by Adrian Dover

This novel was written in 1896, working up notes made at different times over the preceding year, and was first serialized in the Americn journal Atlantic monthly as The old things. Full details of all publications known to me containing the tale can be found in the first section of the bibliography.

The e-text on this web-site is taken from the first London book edition (Heinemann, 1897), subject to the editor’s standard editorial method. Six emendations have been made in preparing this text from the source, required by typographical errors and loose sorts, as detailed below:

location in 1897
Heinemann edition
original text correction
page 3, line 11 dulness dullness
page 39, line 2 <space>ears tears
page 88, line 26 so, so.
page 104, line 3 said<space> said:
page 139, line 8 Gereth s Gereth’s
page 177, line 25 know, know?

Because of the production method the text has been proof-read twice, but only by this editor, so it is possible that an error has slipped through twice – offers of proofing assistance will be gratefully received by Adrian Dover.
