Multiplied visions : Henry James’s The better sort / by Carol Capra Kuniholm. – Philadelphia : University of Pennsylvania, 1984. – 177 p. ; 28? cm. Thesis (Ph. D.) – University of Pennsylvania. – DAI 1984 December, 45 (6): page 1752-A

judging by the abstract, this aims to demonstrate Kuniholm’s thesis that James’s continued attempts to write tales, despite his frequent inability to keep them within short story lengths, arose from his desire to produce a quantity and variety of fiction reflecting the life around him, in the manner of the French social realists; this throws the contexts of the tales’ publications into higher relief, as illustrated by the collection The better sort, where the tales’ most valuable testimony is to show ‘the importance of finding a way out of one’s own narrow patterns of thought’
